For this week’s gallery spotlight, we would like to introduce you to Stefan Horik from Baie St Paul, Quebec.

My name is Stefan Horik, I am a professional artist and I have been selling my work throughout galleries in Canada and the Unites States for over 20 years.

What sparks your inspiration?

I am an outdoors guy. I love nature and I find a lot of my inspiration in the woods, my hiking adventures and my travelling.

What medium do you primarily use and why?

I started painting a long time ago with oil and I stuck with it since. That medium suites my style because it is a nice paste and it doesn’t dry too fast. I paint with palette knives with large strokes and lots of oil that gives each piece a lot of texture and character.

What started you down the path of creating fine art?

My father is an artist and painter, we moved to the beautiful Charlevoix region in Quebec when I was 7 years old. My artistic seed was planted when I was a child watching my father paint for hours on end. As soon as I finished school, I started to paint more seriously and worked at developing my own style.

What have you been working on lately?

I am blessed to live in a region filled with inspiration. So in these bizarre times when it is hard to travel I spend a lot of time in the hinterland of Charlevoix. So I am doing a lot of mountain scenes lately.

What advice do you have for up-and-coming artists?

I think the toughest part is to find something personal to say and to do it in a singular way. It is not enough to be good technically. So my advice would be: Once you have the basics covered spend time exploring...

Check back in every week to learn more about our artists.

I am always striving to make a better painting. Recently I have been working on my M.F.A. Thesis exhibition. Today I will start the final two pieces. Blues and Orange. Two large scale circle paintings. I also have a few small commissions that I will create for collectors.
